On April 24-25, 2021, General Secretary Xi took an inspection of Guilin and put forward a goal: build Guilin as a world-class tourism city. This is an encouraging event. Then with the lifting of pandemic restrictions in 2023, Guilin is recovering from its past slump and restoring its former bustle and hustle. This change is raising people’s attention to Guilin’s tourism. And as a MTI student from native Guilin, the translator has a deep affection for exploring its tourism history. So I decide choose the source text of my translation project from The History of Guilin Tourism written by Pang Tiejian. Checking from CNKI, the translator found the related materials are also very scarce, so even a small try may turn out to be a big contribution.

1.2 Introduction to Source Texts

The History of Guilin Tourism was written by Pang Tiejian and published by Guangxi Normal University Press in February 2022. As a newly published book, it is a valuable reference for scholars and students of related majors to study the formation and development of Guilin’s natural and cultural landscape. Many unprecedented historical relics, anecdotes of celebrities and social life of many ordinary people are recorded in the book. They help people recall the past and imagine the future of Guilin, while foreign readers can “visit” a three-dimensional Guilin in the reading process before getting a deeper experience by landing on this land and walking in these scenic spots. Tourism as it is entitled, the book is not a pure record and description of Guilin scenery, a reason why the translator chooses it for translation source text. From a historical point of view, it is even more refreshing for tourists to understand Guilin’s past as an ancient tourist city. The author of the book, Mr. Pang Tiejian, had worked in Guilin Tourism Bureau and served as the president of the Guilin Tourism Association. There is no doubt that his writings on Guilin tourism history have authoritative and academic values. It is a great honor for the translator to get Mr. Pang Tiejian’s permission to translate some contents of this book. The source text of the translation is excerpted from its preface (pp.1-4), the third (pp.424-437) and fourth (pp.451-455) sections of Chapter 7, totaling 11,612 Chinese characters.

Chapter Two Description of Translation Process

2.1 Pre-Translation

Before translating, the translator thoroughly examined the source text and confirmed its characters. In order to successfully complete the translation, the translator made a series of pre-translation plans to better familiarize himself with similar texts.

2.1.1 Analysis of Source Texts

Many proper nouns appeared in the source text at first. The translator found there are several kinds of proper nouns in the source text: attractions’ names (many of them still lack an official translation), institutions’ names, written words, and tourism terms.
