,the film Homeless to Harvard has conveyed a lot ofinformation via the multimodal metaphors.Thus,the research on multimodal metaphors in thefilm Homeless to Harvard can provide a case study for multimodal metaphor research.Secondly,this thesis takes multimodal metaphors in the film as the research target,exploresdifferent modes involved in realizing the multimodal metaphors,and studies the function ofeach mode in the process of meaning construction,which broadens the scope of metaphorstudies and pave the way for further studies by illustrating the dynamic construction ofmultimodal metaphor.Thirdly,based on the knowledge of the nature of metaphor in cognitivelinguistics,this thesis affirms that metaphor is an important way for human beings to perceivethe world,understand the world and form concepts.Human beings promote the developmentof brain and the improvement of thinking ability through practical activities,so as to generatenew cognition and concept,and finally constantly create new material and spiritualcivilization.Therefore,studying the cognitive construction of multimodal metaphor in films isin fact the exploration and development of cognitive linguistics theory.

Chapter 2 Literature Review and Theoretical Foundations

2.1 Key Notions

With the increasingly comprehensive application of multimodal metaphor,it’s of greatsignificance to have a full understanding of the related notions.Thus,the definition ofmetaphor,mode,modality,multimodality and multimodal metaphor is presented in thissection.

2.1.1 Metaphor

Scholars have been iterating their research on metaphor,going back to earlier studies.According to the classification of Professor Shu Dingfang(2003),there are three levels ofmetaphor study.The study of rhetoric,which is the first stage,runs from 300 B.C.to the1930s and is proposed by the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle.At this point,it should benoted that the Greek word metaphorein is the source of metaphor.The reason for the fact thatmetaphor is defined as carrying is that the original meaning of the root meta-is to cross andthe meaning of the suffix phorein is to carry.

The semantic analysis of metaphor is the second level.Beginning from the standpoint ofphilosophy and linguistics,the period covered by this stage is from the early 1930s to the1970s.At this point,metaphor’s definition has also evolved.According to Collins EnglishDictionary(2018),a metaphor is a storytelling device that allows for unrestricted imaginationand is primarily used to describe the same thing by citing analogous features of the targetobject.For instance,you might state that someone is a cute rabbit to convey how adorable andlovely he or she appears.

2.2 An Overview of the Studies on Multimodal Metaphor

Since the theory of multimodal metaphor is put forward by Forceville,there are manyresearches about it in various academic fields.Although the development of multimodalmetaphor is not quite mature yet,it has great research potential.The following part is thereview of the study abroad and at home.
