6.1 Southerners’Transcendence

Southerners,including Malone,Sherman and Jester,transcend theirindividualized existence,and at the same time,experience themselves as the bearer ofwhat Fromm calls“the active powers”(30).They find their way of living in thealienated society.

By finding a new tie with his family and the society,Malone transcends theseparateness of his individual existence.His new tie relies on the ability to love,aslove“is a union with somebody,or something,outside oneself,under the condition ofretaining the separateness and integrity of one’s own self”(Fromm 30).In the act ofloving,Malone regains his active powers of care,respect and responsibility.

Malone cares and respects the black boy,Sherman.He questions other whites’unreasonable hatred for the black when people gather together at his pharmacy,deciding to bomb Sherman’s house.Malone describes,“Those gathered in thedrugstore were all ordinary people,so ordinary that he usually didn’t think of them oneway or the other.But tonight he was seeing the weakness of these ordinary people,their ugliness”(McCullers 193).Malone regrets lending the pharmacy to the meetingand their weakness and ugliness shake his faith of white supremacy,and in the end ofthe meeting,he refuses their decision.At that time,it is no longer Sherman’s blue eyes that terrifies him,but the cruelty of the white community.French philosopherRousseau points out that a person in the natural state holds two kinds of naturalinstincts,which refer to his own existence and his compassion for others(305).As forMalone,he has changed from a man who is indifferent and prosaic into a man ofpassion and gratitude.He is not only aware of his own identity,but also shows hisrespect and compassion for others.

CHAPTER VII CONCLUSION

Clock Without Hands presents the panorama of American South,and it revealsthat although the Civil War ended one hundred years ago,the shadows of beingdefeated still haunted the southerners’mind.The novel does not only portrays lonelyindividuals and desperate interpersonal relationship,and it also innovates in thedimensions of time and space.It guides readers to focus on the Southern historicaltunnel.Thus,social reality can be introspected.McCullers truly records the changingof the South to readers.With her meticulous observation of social alienation,socialchanges and development,she integrates her reflections into the creation of Clockwithout Hands.
