5 Conclusion

In Midnight’s Children,Rushdie creates an unreal and impossibly fantastical environment thatis full of unnatural features that conflict with reality and leave us feeling perplexed,such asmystical characters,improbable story settings,and bizarre narrative approaches.Unnaturalnarrative,one of the most intriguing new paradigms in narrative theory in recent years,contributesto a deeper understanding of the analysis in this book.Based on the unnatural narratology,thisthesis interprets these unnatural elements in the novel,covering the unnatural narrator and itsunnatural narrative acts of narration,logically and physically impossible events,and unnaturaltime and spaces,through different unnatural reading strategies proposed by Alber,which conveyRushdie’s disapproval of the commotion both before and after India’s independence.

The protagonist and unnatural narrator,Saleem Sinai,tells the story of his legendary life andhis mysterious and complex entanglement with the Indian subcontinent.As a“first-person”narrator,he narrates considerable details and events in his absence as if he were on the scene,beyond the limited perspective of the first-person“I”.As a telepathic narrator,he can get into theinterior monologue of others and“eavesdrop”on their minds through the magic of mind-readingsuper-ability given by his“big cumbersome nose”,all of which are humanly and physicallyimpossible in the real world,making him an unnatural narrator.Additionally,Saleem’s unreliablenarrative behaviors,the misjudgment of his parents’identity,and the underreporting of his ownidentity reveal the Indian’s identity crisis and imply the Indian’s identity quest.
