1.1 An Introduction to Monica Ali and Brick Lane

Monica Ali was born in 1967 in Dhaka,Bangladesh(formerly East Pakistan).Ali's fatherwas a Bangladeshi while her mother was a British.When the civil war broke out in EastPakistan in 1971,Ali's parents were forced to emigrate to Britain.Four-year-old Ali lived withher parents in Ireland,England.Although they lived in a foreign country,Ali's father attachedgreat importance to the education of his children's Bangladeshi culture and told Ali about allkinds of culture of Bangladesh,which also deeply affected Ali's cognition and understandingof the culture of her mother country.Ali's immigration experience provided a wealth ofmaterial and inspiration for her creation.She studied philosophy,politics and economics atWadham College.After graduation,Ali worked as a designer and editor in a publishing house.At work,Ali met her husband Simon Torrance.The couple had a son and a daughter.Therefore,Ali quit her job to focus on taking care of her children.Later,her love of literaturemade her join an organization that wrote short stories online.Ali started her writing journey.She was an effective and prolific writer.From 2003 to 2011,Ali has written a total of fournovels,including Brick Lane,Alentejo Blue,In the Kitchen and The Untold Story.These fourworks have similar topics,covering ethnic identity,religion,women's plight,the life ofcommon people and dreams of different classes of characters.All of these works receivedgood reviews.Ali won Commonwealth Writers'Prize and the title of the Best Young Writerunder 40 years old for her works.Now,she is a professor at Columbia University and thejudge of the Royal Society Winton Prize and Guardian First Book Award.

Brick Lane,Ali's first novel,was published in 2003 and became a bestseller.It won theNational Book Critics Circle Award,the British Book Award,the George Orwell Prize andwas shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize.At the same time,this book was recommended byall kinds of major British Press,including the Economist,the London Review of Books andthe Times.

1.2 Literature Review

Monica Ali published her most influential novel Brick Lane in 2003.The novel cateredto the hot topic of immigration in the diversified background.Therefore,scholars at home andabroad paid great attention to this novel.

1.2.1 Studies Abroad

Foreign studies on Brick Lane started from 2004.It mainly analyzed from theperspectives of character identity construction,feminist theme,war and religious background,cultural documentary,and narrative.
