1 Introduction

1.1 Research background and significance

Countries in Asia and Europe, as well as other participants, are interested in developing efficient, economically viable and environmentally sustainable trade routes and corridors between China and Europe. As of 2019, in terms of value, 70% of trade is by sea, more than 25% by air, according to an estimate presented in the publication entitled 'Connecting Europe and Asia: The cornerstones of the EU strategy' by the European Commission, as of 2019. while rail transport remains relatively limited[4]. However, there is potential for growth across all sectors. The competitiveness of rail services can be increased by reducing delivery times and improving load factors, as well as by creating agreed contractual conditions for carriage. The above publication also expresses the view that road transport will be efficient at medium distances and as a secondary transport network in combination with other modes of transport[5]. The need to further strengthen connectivity between China and Europe was recognized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in 2015, when the concept of creating an institutional mechanism to support interregional transport links between Asia and Europe was first presented through a resolution. adopted with the aim of strengthening intraregional and interregional communication capabilities in the Asia-Pacific region. This initiative was then further developed and agreed at the third session of the ESCAP Ministerial Conference on Transport in 2016, which adopted the Ministerial Declaration on Sustainable Transport Connectivity in Asia and the Pacific[6], including an agreement to establish an interregional transport coordination committee between Asia and Europe[7]. Thus, transport connectivity between Asia and Europe is one of the main objectives of the Regional Action Program for Sustainable Transport Connectivity in Asia and the Pacific of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). Its main mission is to improve transport connectivity between the two regions through infrastructure development initiatives and harmonization of technical standards with the ultimate goal of creating an interregional coordinating body that coordinates tasks, stimulates action and sets benchmarks for progress to promote smooth, sustainable and viable transport links for passengers and goods. 

1.2 Research ideas and methods

1.2.1 Research ideas

This paper begins with an analysis of the problematic points of rail and road transport in the China-Europe corridor. Comparative analysis of problems allows us to identify common points of contact, and analysis of existing options allows us to apply a flexible solution to solve problems of all major types of land transport. In addition, this study lists all the main working international initiatives in the field of China-Europe transport, and also highlights all the main problem areas. Based on this, it is proposed to create a list of recommendations for flexible resolution of rail and road transport problems.
