1.1 Text Selection Healthy Lifestyle-From Pediatrics to Geriatrics edited by Roya Kelishadi was published by Springer in 2022. The book introduces the lifestyle habits related to the risk factors of chronic diseases and summarizes various changeable factors that affect people’s health chronically, which is designed to help the public to develop healthy lifestyles. A healthy lifestyle is what we pursue in our lifetime. As society speeds, people are faced with various challenges in work and life and live a stressful and fast-paced life, which may influence their health. The book provides lots of evidence to discuss the means of developing a healthy lifestyle, introduces various measures that improve health and advocates the prevention of diseases. It can serve as positive guidance for the public and help people to prevent diseases and establish healthy lifestyles from a science-based perspective. Owing to those reasons, the ninth and eleventh chapters of the book are chosen as translation materials.

1.2 Text Types and Features

K. Reiss, representative of the German functionalism, classified all texts into three types according to the main functions of texts: “informative texts, expressive texts, and operative texts” (Zhang Meifang, 2013). Reiss (2004) claimed that informative texts aim to express facts, information, knowledge, opinions, etc. Their language is characterized by clear logic, and the focus of them is on contents rather than on forms. Healthy Lifestyle-From Pediatrics to Geriatrics, which attaches importance to facts and information with clear logic, is hence classified as an informative text. Therefore, when translating this kind of text, translators should be faithful to the source text. In the aspect of the features of the source text, they are analyzed from the level of lexis, syntax and discourse as follows:

At the lexical level, there are many medical terms such as “adrenaline hormone”, “alkaloid”, “pharmacokinetics”, “aetiology”, “oropharynx”, “oesophagus” and “tuberculosis” in the source text. Furthermore, many abbreviations can be found in the text, including ENDS, NCD, LMICs, SES, COPD, SIDS, etc.

Chapter 2 Process Description

2.1 Preparations before Translation

Following preparations were made including knowing about the source text’ s background information and style and so on in order to produce a faithful and idiomatic translation.

To begin with, the translator read some parallel texts. By selecting the key words and terms from the source text, the translator found and read some papers and journals related to tobacco use and alcohol consumption on CNKI such as A 2020 Health Report on the Harms of Smoking in China, Factors for Underage Drinking, etc. Those articles help the translator have a better knowledge of the background information about the source text and preliminarily master terminologies in this field.
