Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 The Introduction of Lexical Chunks

2.1.1 Definitions of Lexical Chunks

It is quite necessary to know some terms about lexical chunk before talking about thedefinitions of it. Totally 57 terminologies have been created and employed to describelexical chunk by the linguists when they are carrying through their researches. In this part,the author summarize some representative ones. At abroad, Becker (1975) called thislinguistic phenomenon “prefabricated chunk”. It is called “lexicalized sentence stem” byPawley and Syder (1983). While in the 1990s, Nattinger & De Carrico (1992) gave a namecalled “lexical phrase”, and Lewis (1997) used “lexical item” to describe it. Also, in China,the scholars have employed various terms. Many terminologies can be found in ChineseJournal Full-text Database (I994-2007), and they are chunks, lexical chunks, collocation,conventionalism, multi-word units, idioms, colligation etc.. Among all the terms, it isobvious that there is no terminology that is generally recognized and accepted to describethis linguistic phenomenon. However, actually, the linguists and the scholars are expressingthe same thing though different terms have been employed. This paper mainly uses theexpression of “lexical chunk”.

As for the definition of lexical chunk, researchers at home and abroad have differentviews. The following definitions are some representative ones.

At abroad, Nattinger and De Carrico (1992) defined lexical chunk as a linguisticstructural unit with both lexical and grammatical characteristics. Being a combination ofsemantics, grammar and context, lexical chunk can be recreated by using syntactic rules.Michael Lewis (1993) defined lexical chunks as ideal linguistic units, and they mainlyconsist of fixed and semi-fixed collocations, idioms, phrases and so on, which will helpenhance the fluency and idiomaticity of language expressions. Lexical chunk contributes alot to the memory and output of language, and it can be extracted as a whole. Moon (1997)named the term as “multi-word item”.

2.2 Relevant Studies on Lexical Chunks

2.2.1 Previous Studies on Lexical Chunk Abroad

At abroad, the studies on lexical chunk mainly involve: the conception of lexicalchunk, the definition of lexical chunk, the classification of lexical chunk, its cognitivepsychology process, its main effects in second language learning, and its influence of onlanguage teaching. Except for the concept, the definition and the classification of lexicalchunk that have been discussed in the preceding paragraphs, the other three kinds ofresearches are summarized as the following parts:

(1)Studies on the cognitive psychology process of lexical chunk

Wong-Fillmore (1976) found that the main content of children's discourse consist oflexical chunks, and then confirms the importance of lexical chunks in the process ofdeveloping language competence.
