Introduction

1.1 Toni Morrison and Beloved

Toni Morrison(February 18,1931—August 5,2019)was an African American womanwriter with a strong sense of social responsibility.Most of her works deal with thetraumatic history of African American women.A well-known novel with such a theme,Beloved describes vividly the traumatic experience of Sethe during and after slavery,whocan be regarded as a representative of African American woman.

1.1.1 About Toni Morrison

Toni Morrison was recognized as one of the most influential contemporary AfricanAmerican writers.She was awarded numerous prizes in her lifetime.In 1993,she becamethe first black woman to win the Nobel Prize for literature.Besides,she also received otherliterary awards,such as the National Book Foundation’s Medal of DistinguishedContribution to American Letters in 1996,the National Book Review Awards in 1977,thePulitzer Prize for Novels in 1988 and the National Humanities Medal in 2000.

Toni Morrison’s early experience made great contribution to her ardor for blackculture.She was born in Lorain,Ohio,a place that was deeply steeped in black ritual,musicand language.Influenced by this kind of environment,Toni Morrison’s elder familymembers also knew a lot about black culture.Her parents and great parents told hernumerous folklores about the black community.It could be said that she was surroundedwith black music,language,folktales,myths and rituals when she was still young.Naturally,she gradually cultivated a deep appreciation for black cultural heritage.

1.2 Literature Review

Since the publication of Beloved,it has received extensive attention abroad.Comparatively,the research on the novel in China started a little late.However,since ToniMorrison won the Nobel Prize in 1993,her novels have also drawn extensive attention ofChinese scholars.Besides,her novel Beloved was the focus of attention.

1.2.1 Research Abroad

As Toni Morrison’s masterpiece,Beloved has attracted wide attention of foreignscholars since it came out in 1987.The research materials are rich,ranging frommonographs to journals,book reviews as well as theses.The perspectives of literarycriticism about the novel are diverse,which roughly can be divided into these fivecategories:narratology,feminism,psychoanalysis,trauma theory,post colonialism and postmodernism.
