Therefore, “misreading” received much attention from scholars and some theories were developed accordingly. Issues about “misreading” and “authorial intention” have become hot topics in the circle of translation.(Su Yifeng, 2004: IV)
Poetic Misprision and its application:
In the western world, many scholars like Jacques Derrida, Lawrence Venuti, George Steiner, Susan Bassnett, André Lefevere and so on, applied Poetic Misprision to their own study and formed some influential ideas about translation.
Deconstruction theorist Derrida claims that translation is just the game that plays with the diversities in languages.(Derrida, 2001: 524)In Deconstruction theory, meaning is an effect but not a prior presence. A text is an open system and full of “gaps” and “indeterminacy”, once it was produced, the author has no obligation for it. Readers fill up the “gaps” and decide on a specific explanation to the “indeterminacy” of the text. Just like what Bloom thinks: reading is always belated, literary language is over-determined, consequently, the meaning is underdetermined, therefore, the search for fixed meaning is impossible. Strictly speaking, deconstruction is not a translation theory, but just a new perspective for translation, its emphasis on difference leads to the appreciation of creative treason.
Influenced by deconstruction theory, Venuti points out translation is a cultural political practice. Plurality of culture and language leads to the indeterminacy of meaning. Translator’s understanding may be deviant from the ST. After careful study of translation practice with Anglo-American culture as the center, he finds out that the pervasive practice of putting other cultures into the institution of English culture through domesticating translation is a kind of cultural imperialism. He proposes a
strategy of “resistancy” to resist against ethnocentric violence and cultural imperialism. The translator is equal in status to the writer, he shouldn’t be invisible in translating, and therefore, the transformation and revision of the ST is unavoidable in certain historical situation and cultural background.
George Steiner puts forward the idea that “any interpretation is translation” (Steiner, 2002: 28). He claims that any process of interpretation including listening, reading, performing that keeping the vitality of language beyond its settings is translation, and translation, in its basic nature, is a betray to individual privacy and a nation’s unique ideology. The reading of a text involves an analysis of the relationship it shares with other texts. And the reading of a literary text after its birth, from the diachronic point of view, is naturally a kind of variation from the original one. A text keeps on living through re-reading. Language is dynamic with its centrifugal force and creativity which produce chances for the reader of a language structure to interpret it with his personal understanding.
