According to Davies 1994 quoted in Kong (2004, p351), subordinate clauses are used and the main function of this kind of themes can give interpersonal function. The authors might want to persuade the readers to buy the books through an interaction of the authors’ meaning with the readers on the content of the books
2. The marked themes in the two genres
There has been an increase in Marked Isolated themes for the two genres and a decrease in Marked Derived themes. It is not difficult to speculate that the authors might try to create more interpersonal meaning in the Marked Isolated Themes in both genres.

By looking at one sentence below as an example of an abstract (A2):

In the same abstract, the author also reduces the use of Derived Themes in marked situation. However, it does not mean that the author gives way to the interpersonal meaning. It might be due to the strong need of interpersonal relation between the author and the readers. The abstract, on the other hand, is initiated by a complex sentence with a Marked Derived Theme. It is printed as below:

After critiquing the speech act treatment of inviting as either a single or a co-operative speech act, the paper proposes that Chinese invitation is a type of discourse, which features a tripartite structure and embodies a dual politeness strategy.

The authors in the abstracts use substantial Marked Derived Themes because academic articles are concerned with substantial specific contents in relation to the topic. The contents are therefore related to ideational meaning of the texts. The writers might want to include those Marked Derived Themes to highlight the relevance of the topic.

When looking into the genre of book blurbs, it is amazing to find that there is a prominent increase of Marked Isolated Themes used by the authors. This might reflect the potential and strong need of interpersonal relation between the authors and readers in the field. By looking at the type of books, it is found that all of them are linguistic textbooks written for undergraduate students. The market of linguistic textbook is very big and the competition is also very keen. In order to sell the books in a more effective way, the blurbs are designed to give good impression to the potential readers. As for the layman and potential buyers of these books, the blurbs are designed to give simple and comfortable explanation for the introduction of the books.
