Abstract: In this
essay we will review the macroeconomic performance for three different types of economic markets with relation to internationalization of business. We will start with a larg industrial economy (Germany), then with a small open economy (South Africa) and a non-triad emerging economy (Panama). Accordingly we will conduct a detailed study to market situation in these three different economic markets, accompanied with an analysis to, in order find the effect of the global economy crisis in their performance, in parallel to their GDP figures in last three years. Finally there will be a critical examination of advantages and disadvantages as a potential export or import market, and this by analysing the strengths and weaknesses of these economies as a potential location for Foreign Direct Investment.
Panama:
1.1 Economy overview
Geographically Panama is located between the two cotenants (South and North American cotenants), accordingly the economy of Panama depends completely on the well developed, location based service sector; a good example will be the famous Panama Canal. Service industry is contributing in almost two third of gross domestic product .Furthermore the country developed an advanced banking sector which is colon free zone, yet insurance and tourism are also taking an important role in developing Panamas economy. According to the latest results Panama archived a GDP of 8.1% in 2006, 11.5% in 2007 and 9.2% in 2008. Thus almost 77.6% of GDP goes to well developed service sector and 16.1 goes to Industry and manufacturing, however there is a small contribution of 6.2 for Agriculture, while check to the Latest report from US department of states in regards to country trades ; we found that the most goods that Panama imports and export shows:
That Panama Traded in 2008 exports valued almost $10.37 billion from goods, such as bananas, petroleum products, shrimp, sugar, coffee, and clothing. Furthermore this export valued up to US $377 million which is represents a 3.9% of total exports. On the other hand Panama imported $15.18 billion of capital goods, crude oil, foodstuffs, chemicals, and other consumer intermediate goods. And due to the special relationships between the two countries, US took a major share in their trades, with amount reaches $4.9 billion of the total imports 32% (State, 2008).
While measuring Panama*s purchasing power per capita (PPC), the amount hits almost 11,300 $, which is considered as a the highest PPC rate, while comparing this result to Panamas neighbors ,such as Colombia $ 3,867 and Costa Rica $ 5,560.(Doingbusiness, 2008)
