An analysis of the opportunities and threats for the car manufacturers associated with the enlargement of the European Union
Introduction
After the establishment of European Union (the EU), it has experienced five times of expansion. Compared with the former four expansion of the EU, the expansion of the EU in 2004 was extraordinary. According to a recent survey of the International Trade Forum, when the 10 Eastern European countries joined the EU, the area of the European Union has reached 4.5 million square kilometers; its population has reached 453 million, becoming the world's regional political and economic group which has the highest level of integration, and the world's largest free trade zone. At the same time, it has also become a considerable group of countries whose size of the overall economy is also equal to the United States’, which brings the EU's car manufacturers more business opportunities, but it also gives them some new challenges. This article uses the method of PEST analysis to analyze the opportunities and threats which the EU’s enlargement has brought the EU’s car manufacturers.
Opportunities and threats for the car manufacturers
2.1 Political factors
First, to join the EU, the new member countries must prove that they can meet the requirements of the three basic criteria of member countries which have been determined in the Copenhagen summit meeting of the EU in June 1993. These are: possessing the institution, rule of law and human rights which have a defense of democratic stability, respecting for and protection of minorities; having a well-established market economy, as well as the capabilities to cope with the competitive pressures and market forces within the EU; the ability to perform duties of member countries, including honoring purpose of their political, economic and monetary unions. These countries could join the EU, which has first of all shown that their political situation is stable, the governments have a better ability to control the economy and the ability to perform member responsibilities.
Then, when these countries entered into the EU, they will adopt a consistent policy with the EU in the political areas.
