Abstract

Material degradation has called more attentions because it decreases the safety, durability, and capacity of structure. Aluminium alloys are considered as the main material tomanufactureaircraft which has great significance for the development of the society. And the localised corrosion of the aluminium structure of the aircraft causes the damage leading to risks of safety and increasing maintain costs. Therefore damage detection is becoming more and more important for the engineering of companies.Structure health monitoring (SHM)which is a new technology can reduce the maintenance costs of the structures by locating and identifying the damages of the structures.

Thisthesisuses anelastic stress approachformonitoringan aluminiumstructure.In this thesis the application of the ABAQUS 6.12 is carried out for the finite element simulatinganalysis to analyse the healthcharacter of an isotropic aluminium structureby monitoring the behaviour of lamb waves.This thesis aims to use the ABAQUSsoftware which is a finite element model to simulate the SHM model of the aluminium structure. And the Lamb wave is applied in this model because it can stretch a very far area of the structure from onlyone location. The model usespiezoelectric patches including one actuator and one sensor, and the model changes the driving frequencies of Lamb wave to achieve the different responses.
This paper first introduces the background of SHM for prestress engineering structureand it gives a brief introduction of the purpose of the thesis, and the research method of this paper is also illustrated.Then the second part discusses the literature reviews of SHM, and it discusses the previous studies of SHM technology and the pre-stressed engineering structure, and it especially states the characters of piezoelectricity including piezoelectric actuator, piezoelectric sensor and piezoelectric transducer, and then it mainly illustrates the elastic wave including its types and its application in different structures.The third part is the main body of the thesis, the installation and experimental setup in the structure are described, and it builds a damage model to test the structural health using elastic stress approach. Then the results of the research are discussedand some suggestions about the SHMS have also been provided.
