Turbulent and volatile markets are becoming the norm as life-cycles shorten and globaleconomic and competitive forces create additional uncertainty. The risk attached tolengthy and slow-moving Logistics ëpipelinesí has become unsustainable, forcingorganisations to look again at how their supply chains are structured and managed. Thispaper suggests that the key to survival in these changed conditions is through ëagilityí, inparticular by the creation of responsive supply chains. A distinction is drawn betweenthe philosophies of ëleannessí and ëagilityí and the appropriate application of these ideasis discussed.
