Since 2006, the multi-media room, according to timetables (see Appendix A) is especially offering courses for juniors and seniors. It was especially, used for theory courses and for the big classes which consisted of at least 60 students. At first, teachers liked to offer their class with using the multi-media rooms. I personally found from arranging the timetable and my work as a technician during the last three semesters, a deep impression of satisfaction with the facility. Judging form the forthcoming timetable for the next semester, we can predict that the utilization will be higher than first term. In the third semester the room was just used by foreign teachers. Most of the time, they used it for cultural introduction, for example, the Bible as Literature, Alternative View of Good Life in West Country, Viewing Listening and Speaking. In the third term, the multi-media room was fully occupied by the teachers. However, in the fourth semester, just two teachers have plans to use it. What are the reasons leading to this situation? With this question in mind I carried out this study
2. The study
2.1 Procedure
In order to investigate attitudes from the students, a questionnaire consisting of 11 closed questions and open questions designed by the author was distributed to several classes’ students who took the class in the multi-media room at the school of foreign languages of GZUN.
2.2 The subjects and instruments
Of 150 students from the SFL, GZUN, ranging in 4 grades, 45 students who have passed the Test of English for Major 4 brand were selected random to do the questionnaire. Therefore, the subjects are divided into two groups:
Group A: The freshman and sophomore, without multi-media room experiences.
Group B: The senior and junior, the multi-media room experiences.
All the data has been collected and processed by Microsoft Office Excel 2003 and the results collected are demonstrated here in chart form (see page 16, 17).
2.3 Study design
A questionnaire (see Appendix B) entitled “Questionnaire of CALL in GZUN”with 15 questions containing closed questions and 4 open questions designed by myself for the students to evaluate the utility and effects of CALL in the multi-media room. Question 1 to 5 aims to get the basic information about the subjects and their learning experiences in the multi-media room. Question 6 is designed to evaluate the effects of an electricity power failure in the multi-media room. Questions 7 to 10 examine the failings or disadvantages of CALL from the student’s perspective and their relationships to the teacher.
The survey investigates the subjects’ attitude regarding the electricity shortages. The second and most important part of the study is the collecting of the academic scripts from students of class 2004 (see Appendix B). Throughout the survey, the patterns show the effect of multi-media learning approach against non multi-media learning approach and the results are compared with each other. The findings are taking from the second term of the academic year 2006 to 2007 and the first term of the academic year 2007-2008, when the student of class of 2004 had taken courses in multi-media room. In order to get an accurate transcript, the scores from all the students were collected.
