摘要:In the field of cognitive linguistics, researches about cognitive metaphor have been made bymany researches, especially for the conceptual metaphor and its influence on the second languageteaching. However, there is a lack of making a research to investigate the metaphor use of Chinesecollege students in China. Although this research has existed aboard, its enlightenment and instructionis limited for Chinese college students. Therefore, this study regards Chinese college students as thesubjects in order to expose the condition and the features of their metaphor use in the process ofwriting. It is a combination of quantitative and qualitative research on the metaphor use of Chinesecollege students.

With the development of cognitive linguistics, more andmore scholars accept and pay more attention to the special function of metaphor in foreign teaching.The consequence of this study has a great practical significance and implication for the languageteaching.The consequence of this study implicates that foreign teachers should put the metaphor teachinginto the whole foreign teaching. The findings of this study indicate that the quality of the use of conceptmetaphor expressions by the Chinese college students was accompanied by the progress of their Englishproficiency, but this kind of use isn’t balanced since the quantity in frequency is observed in theirwritings. As to this reality, suggestions are provided in the hope of improving Chinese college students’written language competence pedagogically. Firstly, English language teachers at home should beencouraged to make good use of the technique of contrastive analysis to help know what linguistic itemsneed correcting. Secondly, English language teachers at home should aim at developing learners’awareness of metaphor when teaching English writings. Under many circumstances, Chinese collegestudents can only create Chinese metaphor sentences. Though correct in contents and forms, thewritings are short of sentence accuracy such as oreintational metaphor forms. In fact, the forms oforeintational metaphor can be concise and comprehensive to convey thought. Thirdly, in the periods ofgrade Two, students’ language competence develops very quickly, at this time teachers should take goodadvantage of this period to improve students’ ability to use concept metaphor. Xu Kerong (2005)claimed that in a sense, whether a person has accepted formal and strict instruction and training can bejudged by his competence to produce academic language forms instead of the oral language ones.

 

5.3 Limitations and suggestions for future research
This thesis is only a basic study on the use of metaphor by Chinese college students. it is obviousthat there are some obvious defects and limitations. Although the thesis adopts statistic analysis, thereare still some factors that might influence the validity and the results. For example, the size of theinvestigation is relatively small. If it were bigger, the results would be more valid and accurate.In a word, though it is inevitable that there are some defects, this study has at least enriched theresearches on the concept metaphor. The author hopes that this study can be useful for further researchesand can improve English teaching and learning at college level in China.
