摘要:新的大学英语课程要求外语教学中,教师应逐步退出中心领导地位,注重以学生为中心,注重学生的课堂参与,因为课堂参与对提高学生的语文能力起着非常重要的作用。

Compared with those researches, it is obvious thatresearches on EFL classroom students’ silence are few. Moreover, studies on collegeEnglish classroom students’ silence are few and have not been given enough attention.Even if some researches are about students’ reticence, reasons are not general. All ofwhich leaves enough room for this thesis. It is urgent and necessary to make such akind of study in this field.1.3 Purpose of the StudyThe present research is done with a purpose to find out what factors and howthose factors correlate with students’ silence in EFL class. Based on the constructivisttheory, this thesis will analyze factors that influence students’ active participation inclass. The author tries to generalize the reasons from four facets, teachers, learners,task and context and see how these factors affect students’ participation in Englishclass. And then another purpose of the research is to give some suggestions to improvestudents’ participation, create a harmonious and friendly atmosphere and eventuallyimprove teaching quality.The study analyzes and discusses the obtained data to find out causes that lead tostudents’ inactive participation in English class. The subjects contain 196 freshmen ofChongqing Normal University. It mainly probes a series of questions from thefollowing aspects:1) What and how teacher factors correlate with students’ silence in EFL class?2) What and how learner factors correlate with students’ silence in EFL class?3) How task correlate with students’ silence in EFL class?4) What and how context factors correlate with students’ silence in EFL class?By questionnaire, classroom observation and interview, this study aims to paymore attention to the factors that influence students’ active participation in EFLclassroom. After that the author tries to give some suggestions to improve students’involvement in the class.All in all, the purpose of this thesis is to make some researches on students’ silencein the class and try to give some suggestions to activate the enthusiasm of theuniversity students in class so as to change the current ‘silent’ and ‘cold’ atmosphere inclass.

 

1.4 Overall Structure of the Thesis论文的总体结构
This thesis is composed of six chapters.Chapter One provides a general picture of the study, including background,significance, purpose and structure of the study.Chapter Two presents literature review and related theoretical foundation of thethesis. First of all, the author gives the notion of silence, which includes definition,classifications and functions of silence. And then the previous researches on students’silence in English class are provided. Lastly the author puts forward related theoreticalfoundation and tries to extend the key factors from teachers, learners, task and thecontext.Chapter Three is the methodology. Research questions are put forward firstly. Andthen is the research design. The 196 subjects of this study are chosen casually from thefreshmen of non-English majors. Instruments such as questionnaire, classroomobservation, and interview are used to probe into students’ silence in EFL class. At last,the author collects the data.Chapter Four, the main body of the thesis, analyzes the findings obtained from theabove methods.
