Chapter one Introduction

1.1Background
China has joined the World Trade Organization for many years, which requires that people should not only have the perfect professional skills, but also the excellent language proficiency. In 2008, China successfully held the 29th Olympic Games, which requests people have rich knowledge and broaden eyes. It can be seen clearly that the increasingly communication between China and the world lay high demand for proficiency for Chinese people since 2001. As a worldwide language, English is a very important way for people especially college students to communicate with each other, which is getting increasingly significant both in life and work. So how to train students to suit the current condition is becoming more and more important. As a significant role in the developing of social and economic, the purpose of the Higher Vocational College is to educate students to meet the needs of the situation. Even it developed late in contrast to other format of Education, for the past few years, Higher Vocational College has developed so quickly and the number of Higher Vocational College has increased so rapidly. Therefore, how to teach English well invocational school is getting more and more important. However, English teaching in these schools is beyond satisfactory. Most of the college teachers always emphasis on grammar rules rather than how to use language. It is very common that teachers explain the language points in details during the whole class and students always make notes. Therefore, after graduation they become employees, they cannot understand and react correctly in the process of communication with foreigners, which complained by most of the employers.

For English class, listening is the neglected skill but the most difficult and significantskill within the four skills. However, a successfully listening class is determined by whetherstudents can correctly finish the questions on the examination paper. Normally, Englishlistening class contains three parts: teacher plays the tape, students do the exercises andteacher checks the answers. There are four steps in this mode of an English listening class.The first step is tape-playing, during this process students are asked to get a general idea of the whole text. Then after listening to the tape several times students have to finish theanswers on the textbook. Finally, teacher gives the correct answer to the students.As a matter of fact, students should be positive receivers and teacher should beeffectively guider in an English class. However, Instead of how to listen the material thelistening class only focus on finishing the exercises. Students usually passively listen to thematerial so as to get high scores and teacher always a tape player. These listening processesmake the class dull and students have little motivation even weary of listening class. That isthe reason why students can not improve their listening ability.
