Chapter Two
literature review
This chapter consists of three sections presenting a comprehensive literature review. Section one mainly introduces the scaffolding instruction including its definition, previous related studies and the main theoretical foundation of scaffolding instruction. Section two generally introduces the learner autonomy including definition and acquisition of learner autonomy, related studies of learner autonomy and the theoretical basis of learner autonomy. Section three gives an introduction of autonomy in listening learning and reviews the previous literatures on autonomy in listening learning.
2.1 Scaffolding Instruction
According to Oxford English Dictionary pressed in 1998, the term scaffolding was defined as “temporary framework of platforms and pillars constructed to provide accommodation for workmen and their materials during the erection, repairing or decoration of a building”. Now it is gradually out of the field of building and become a widely recognized concept in educational psychology. The concept of scaffolding was first introduced in the late 1950s by a famous cognitive psychologist Jerome Bruner. He used this term to study young children’s early oral language learning. When they start to speak for the first time with the help of their parents, some instinctive structures will be provided for young children to learn a language.

2.2 Learner Autonomy
Learner autonomy originally comes from the educational philosophy. Foreign language educators joined in the research of learner autonomy in the mid 1970s and soon the concept became a hot topic in the field of second language acquisition. Scholars gave learner autonomy many other kinds of names such as autonomous learning ability, independent learning ability, self-regulated learning and so on. Here in this
