Stephen A. Freeman (1941), a professor of Middlebury University, published an article named What Constitutes a Well-trained Modern Language Teacher, from which on American academic circles formally put forward the training of language teachers, creating a precedent for modern language teacher education in the United States. According to Professor Freeman, a well-trained modern language teacher should have the following qualities: The first is correct pronunciation and idiomatic intonation, from the conscious to the fully exemplary to the unconscious naturally conveyed. The second is the oral facility, only by their unremitting efforts and active practice to ensure that the level of oral English does not decrease. The third is to master the grammar and structure of the language being taught. The fourth is to master a large number of vocabularies. Reading interesting materials is the best way to expand the vocabulary. The fifth is a thorough understanding of other cultures, literary works and civilization including physical geography, geology, industry, agriculture, history, culture, social customs and psychology, etc.
2.2 Classroom Teaching Observation
Classroom teaching observation can promote teacher professional development. Classroom teaching observation refers to an educational scientific research method in which observers directly or indirectly collect data from the classroom situation with their own senses and relevant auxiliary tools, and make corresponding research according to the data. The studies on classroom teaching observation are reviewed as follows, according to the time sequence, from abroad to home, respectively elaborated.
2.2.1 Classroom Teaching Observation Abroad
(1)Theoretical Stage:
The earliest research on teachers' teaching behavior is generally believed to have been proposed by Kratz, an American scholar, in 1896 (Gai Lichun, Zheng Changlong, 2009). Since Kreitz, researchers investigated various types of people around the theme of excellent teacher quality. The research results include a series of scales on teacher characteristics, which serves as a reference for teacher training and basis for improving teacher behavior. Although the research on teacher behavior at this time has entered a period of specialization, it has not formed a certain research scale in that period. Teacher behavior only exists in the exploration of potential objective results of teacher personality and professional traits, which can only be regarded as an indirect attempt to research teacher teaching behavior.
