The Longman Dictionary of Applied Linguistics defines bilingual Education as "the useof a second or foreign language in school for the teaching of content subjects".https://www.51lunwen.org/canada/ Richards J.C. &P1att John (2000) state "bilingual education is the employing of a second(foreign) language at school for subject teaching".Baker (2001) points out that the meaning for "bilingual education" is ambiguous. First, adistinction is needed to be figured out between education that is used to promote twolanguages and education for language minority children. This is the difference between aclassroom where a formal instruction is to foster bilingualism and a classroom wherebilingual children are present, but bilingualism is not fostered in the curriculum. The term"bilingual education" has been used to refer to the two above mentioned situations leaving theterm ambiguous. Precision can be attempted by specifying the major models of bilingualeducation. (Cai Xiaoyan, 2004:5) The term "bilingual education" in this thesis refers to thefirst one that promotes two languages during teaching.
1.1.2 Definition of Bilingual Teaching双语教学的定义
Wang Inhaul (2003) defines bilingual teaching as "teaching non-linguistic subjects likemathematics, physics, chemistry, history, geography, and act. with English".Hu Zhuanglin (2004) points out that bilingual teaching is "teaching some subjects withEnglish in schools to enable students to master specific knowledge and enhance students'English level".The definition of bilingual teaching is not fixed. Combining the above concerns andview-points, the thesis would like to consider the present bilingual teaching in China as a kindof content-based teaching. In this teaching mode, a foreign language, especially English, isused as the teaching medium in the class to teach non-linguistic courses. It makes studentslearn subject knowledge on one hand and improve their English proficiency on the otherhand.
Chapter 2 Multiculturalism and Bilingualism in Canada加拿大的多元双语和双语教学
Canada lies in North America, which is the second largest country in the world with anarea of 9,970,000 square kilometers. A nation based on immigration, Canada has a longhistory of being culturally diverse. The British North American Act that marked CanadianConfederation in 1867 recognized the three racial, religious, and linguistic collectivities ofthat time: the aboriginal people, the English, and the French. Since then, new Canadians havebeen arriving from ever more diverse areas of the world, creating an increasinglymulticultural Canadian population. The fact that bilingual education receives so much support is largely because it promotesbilingualism. Bilingualism has been shown to have positive effects on cognitive skills and, contrary to some common beliefs, does not interfere with performance in either language.Bilingualism is also a powerful asset in a world that is becoming smaller and more connectedby the minute. In Canada, education is under provincial jurisdiction. However, the federal governmenthas been a strong supporter of establishing Canada as a bilingual country and has helpedpioneer the French immersion education in the public education systems throughout Canada.
