摘要:English Reading is regarded as the important means to get information and also anintegral component of English proficiency. The College English Curriculum Requirementsin 2004, which was promulgated by the Ministry of Education, made more and morepeople begin to attach importance to English reading. Then, how to make an effectivereader has become the concern of many people including college non-English majors.However, the traditional teaching method cannot meet their requirements. The teacherteaches a lot about words and grammar, but ignores the relationship of words andparagraphs in the text. The teacher has no awareness to analyze the text from genericaspect. This teaching method causes the students to grasp the language points but fail thetext organization. They meet with a lot of problems when reading. So it is necessary andurgent to do some changes on reading teaching.

6.1 General overview
This paper aims at how to teach students in College English reading class in order toimprove students’ reading ability. First, the author presents current situation and problemsamong College students in their English reading. Then the author introduces genre theoryand textual analysis theory in detail. And next applies textual analysis and genre-basedteaching into College English reading class. Furthermore, through reading comprehensiontests, questionnaire survey and the observation, this paper proves that the combination oftextual analysis and genre-based teaching in English reading class can improve students’reading ability.The major findings of this thesis are: 1) The selection of the topic is meaningful andinnovative to a degree. Nowadays many students face reading problems which thetraditional teaching method cannot solve. Then it is quite necessary to do some research onEnglish Reading Instruction. Textual analysis and genre theory are combined together to beapplied to the practice in this paper. It tries to lead students to understand a discourse fromboth macro and micro aspects.2) The students get much knowledge about genre theory andtextual analysis theory. With the knowledge in their mind, they have learned how to applythem to English reading. Their attitude toward reading has changed. Their reading habitsand reading strategies have also changed to some degree.3)The statistical results from thereading comprehension tests and questionnaires prove that the application of textualanalysis and genre-based teaching does improve students’ reading ability, which furtherconfirms the research value of this paper. Therefore more and more people will confidentlydo further research in this field.Although the author made much research work before writing the paper, there are stillsome limitations. For example, strictly speaking, the materials for the two readingcomprehension tests are not of very high quality. The questions in the two questionnaires,although are modified many times, are not perfect and quite mature. Furthermore, the timespan for the experimental process is a little short, which cannot fully justify the results ofthe experiment.

 

6.2 Implications
