So the results in this processcome naturally, in this sense a conscious effort to learn being unnecessary (Gass, 1999).Nagy, Herman and Anderson (1985) conduct a research and draw a conclusion that a largeproportion of vocabulary learned by school-age children is attributed to incidentallearning. Nation and Moister (1987) also carry out a study on incidental vocabulary acquisition and the result shows that the adults can acquire about 70 percent of theunknown words incidentally.Incidental vocabulary learning has some advantages over direct learning which liein creating opportunities for learners to infer word meaning in context and readingmaterials. Incidental learning of vocabulary can be fostered through text-based tasks. Inline with these researches, as states above, we present the researches about incidentalvocabulary learning through reading.

Conclusion


This study suffers from some limitations although the experiment is carefullydesigned and implemented. Because of the constraints of subjects and material available,we list the limitations as follow:Firstly, only a small number of subjects are involved in each group. The limitednumber of subjects to some extent decreases the persuasiveness of the results.In addition, in vocabulary learning process, the retention is influenced both by theirinternal and external factors. So how to reasonably measure the involvement index needsfurther research with the consideration of both internal and external factors.Finally, the present research on habitual vocabulary strategies study is focus on ageneral aspects and only aims to explore the effect of reading tasks on incidentalvocabulary retention. So sudsiest in future can conduct experiment on habitual vocabularystrategies in detail to probe the correlations of habitual vocabulary strategies andvocabulary gains.
