1.1 The Background of the Present Study
College English is a basic course in Chinese universities. It has always been a hot issue as how toimprove college English teaching quality. In order to achieve the goal, it is necessary to enhance collegeEnglish teachers’ quality and professional development. In terms of teacher professional development, mostcollege English have put great emphasis on self-learning and practice-reflection model through whichteacher quality can be promoted. These models center on developing by teachers themselves. In fact,teachers’ cooperation is also an effective way to promote teacher development.In recent years, the professional cooperation between teacher colleagues is popular in the field ofwestern teacher’s Education. Particularly since the 1980s, the traditional way of teacher professionaldevelopment which was isolated has been unprecedentedly questioned. It is considered that this way ofteacher professional development not only gets teachers’ professional growth into isolated situation, butalso goes against the spread of teacher knowledge. In the mid-1990s, the strain on quantity short of teachersbegan to be relieved gradually in china. From then on, the issue of teacher professional development hascaused wide concern over the country. How can teachers realize their own professional development? Whatis ideal model of the teacher professional development? They are the problems that people are keeping onthinking seriously and trying to answer. Many new views have arisen among theorists and practitioners;one of the grand spectacles is how to impel teacher professional cooperation.大学英语是中国大学的一门基础课程。它一直是一个热点问题,如何提高大学英语教学质量。为了实现这一目标,有必要加强大学英语教师的素质和专业发展。在教师专业发展方面,大部分大学英语自学和实践反射模型,通过该模型,可以促进教师素质的高度重视。这些模型由教师自己开发的中心。事实上,教师的合作也是促进教师专业发展的有效途径。近年来,专业老师的同事之间的合作是在西部教师教育领域的流行。特别是自20世纪80年代分离的教师专业发展,传统的方式已经得到了前所未有的质疑。据认为,这种方式不仅得到教师专业发展教师的专业成长成隔离的局面,而且对教师知识的传播。应变教师数量在20世纪90年代中期,中国开始逐步得到缓解。从此,教师专业发展的问题,已引起全国各地的广泛关注。教师如何才能实现自己的专业发展?头朝下教师专业发展的理想模式?他们是人都保持认真思考,并试图回答的问题。理论家和实践中出现许多新的意见宏图眼镜之一是如何推动教师的专业合作。
According to the researches of professional cooperation made both at home (Wang Tan, 2002) andabroad (Bauwens and Hourcade, 1997), teacher professional cooperation has been regarded as an importantmeans in improving teachers’ development. However, the importance of teachers’ professional cooperationis not well recognized by most Chinese college English teachers. Many college English teachers alwayskeep isolated position in professional development and always acted as individuals. Most teachers destinedto work together do so with little training in how to team teach. Many teachers refuse to team teach becausein a sense, teachers are by definition 'solitary creatures' reluctant to share the limelight or 'be observed' by acolleague. Furthermore, in some situations teachers may not have been given a choice to work together andmay not see the benefits of team teaching, or worse, not respect or get along well with their assignedpartners. The interaction among teachers is rare which is considered to be unfavorable for college Englishteachers to go further the professional development. Meanwhile, the researches also find that few opportunities are provided for novice teachers to participate in research groups.In the traditional teaching method of college English, teaching activities of college English teachersmainly manifest individual working.
