Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Definition of sentence
It is a great challenge to define any concept precisely. As to the connotation of "sentence", different researchers have different understanding .In linguistic term,a sentence is usually composed of one or more clauses, whichincludes a predicate and an explicit or implied subject. For example. in the sentence Itis cold, although the sun is shining, there are two clauses:the main clause is it is coldand the subordinate clause is although the sun is shining. (Hartmann & Stork1972:137).Homburg defined sentence as " A sentence is here defined as a string of wordswith a capital letter at the beginning of the first word and a period or another terminalpunctuation mark after the last word. The writer's use of these conventions thereforecompletely determined the constitution of sentences in the composition."
Generally speaking, a sentence in this study is a grammatically speech unit thatexpresses a statement, a question, a command or an exclamation. In speaking, it isphonetically distinguished by various patterns of stress pitch, and pauses; and inwriting, it concludes with appropriate end punctuation, such as a period, a questionmark or an exclamation mark. Therefore, the designation of a sentence is acombination of a capital letter at the beginning and a terminal punctuation (period,question mark, exclamatory mark, etc.) in the end. Accordingly, semicolon could notbe regarded as a terminal punctuation in the present study as the first word aftersemicolon is not capitalized.
