sh majors, so it is necessary to use relevanttheory to study on structural modeling for graduation thesis parts (Zhang Chunfang, 2011).Northwest A&F University (the A&F) ---the university the author is studying in is also thecase in the above undesirable fact. In the light of convenience, the study conductedschool-based research, and selected undergraduate graduation theses in the field of AppliedLinguistics with which the author is more familiar as the research objects.
Taking the “Move-Step” model proposed by Swales (1990) and the structure model ofresearch papers in Applied Linguistics summarized by Yang Ruiying (2006) as thetheoretical basis and standard, and Northwest A&F University’s undergraduate graduationtheses in English Applied Linguistics as an example, this paper conducts a quantitativeanalysis on the macro-structure and the micro-structure of the body part of the graduationtheses from the point of view of the communicative purpose, investigates the currentwriting situation and problems of the graduation theses through comparison with relevantliterature review, and finally discusses the Implications and enlightenments of the researchresults to thesis writing and teaching.


Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Overseas Genre Analysis on Research Papers
“Aspects of Article Introductions” by John Swales was published in 1981. Since then,genre and genre analysis has become a hot topic in the field of Linguistics for nearly 30years. Genre and genre analysis can be divided into three main schools: “New RhetoricSchool” represented by Miller, “Swalesian School” or “ESP and EAP” represented bySwales and Bhatia, and “Australian School” represented by Martin. Because “New RhetoricSchool” does not take the structural form of genre as research focus, there are no specificmodels of genre analysis and teaching, yet this school analyzes the social cognitive conceptof genre and the behaviors and purposes which genre can realize, from the perspective ofsocial context. Its “rhetoric genre research” provides genre analysis with new perspectivessuch as social, historical, cognitive perspectives and so on (Wen Zhisheng, 2005).“Swalesian School” takes academic and professional discourse as the research objects andproposes their genre analysis models respectively:* Swales (1990) “Move-Step” analysis model for research papers;* Bhatia (1993) “Move-Step” analysis pattern for marketing genre.The two models attempt to outline the general structure and the order of texts ordiscourse so as to explain the differences between different genre (see Qin Xiubai, 1997 &2000). Whereas “Australian School” puts forward two similar but not exactly the samegenre analysis models, according to the relationship between genre and social culturalcontext and situational context, on the basis of systemic functional Linguistics theory.
