This question is an opportunity for you to show that you understand that the diversity of teachers and learners is an asset for learning.
As stated in Part 2, the differences that characterize teachers, students and their families include, but are not limited to, ancestry, culture, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, language, physical and intellectual ability, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status (this list is from Ontario's Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy, 2009), place of origin, and citizenship. Every group of teachers and learners is diverse in at least some of these ways. You may refer to any aspects of diversity in your response.

For my mother's family, immigrating to Toronto from Cyprus in 1966 symbolized an escape from a country which was experiencing civil turmoil and held the promise of a better life. Embracing the various cultures of Toronto, my parents chose to place me in French Immersion, in order to further expose me to diversity. French immersion became the foundation of many more cross-cultural experiences in my life, including traveling to Cuba for several weeks.
I believe that diversity of teachers is an asset to learning as they are able to share their cultural and ethnic differences with their students; this essentially allows their students to learn about other cultures firsthand. They can hear stories of their upbringing and draw comparisons to other cultures and ethnicities.
I believe that diversity of teachers is an asset to learning because they are able to share their ethnic and cultural identity with their students. While volunteering at William Tredway, a school in Toronto's diverse Scarborough neighbourhood, I was often asked by students what my background was and to tell them about where I came from. The students were also very proud of their background and were eager to share stories of their cultural upbringing and point out similarities. I found that discussing the diverse backgrounds of the students, and my own, allowed for an environment of acceptance and inclusion to be created which allowed the students to better understand and relate to their peers and educators.
