Conclusion


The purpose of the current study is to examine whether the medium of correctivefeedback influences the effects of L2 acquisition. To answer this question, two comparisonswere carried out in the current study: (a) oral recasts versus written direct correction and (b)oral metalinguistic versus written metalinguistic CF. The comparisons are as follows:
1. Written direct correction is superior to oral recasts in the study. This may have beendue to either the implicit-explicit difference or to the medium provision difference.
2. The oral metalinguistic feedback is as effective as the written metalinguistic feedbackin promoting the acquisition of English past tense forms. These two types of correctivefeedback are both explicit, providing learners with both the correct form and metalinguisticexplanation.
The effectiveness of these two is due to their explicitness, which implies thatwhether the CF is provided in an oral or written way is not influential in promoting L2acquisition. Thus, the medium of the corrective feedback does not influence the effects of L2acquisition.The results of the exit questionnaire imply that metalinguistic CF performs better thanCF types without metalinguistic information in causing learners* error noticing.All these findings indicate that the degree of CF explicitness influences the effects of L2acquisition.
