1.1 Preface

Since English is widely used in China, as a language phenomenon, it draws theattention of many scholars and educators to do research on it. Because of its productionand development and its distinct characteristics，China English becomes the focus ofattention of many foreign language educators and many researches are done in this field.Any kind of language will inevitably be sinicized in the process of localization when itis used in China. Because of the relatively extensive applications of English, theproblems of China English stand out and become especially important in the research ofthe localization of all kinds of languages. In the 1960s the problems of China Englishbegan to attract the attention of scholars. At that time, China English and ChineseEnglish were not fully distinguished and clearly defined. China English is oftenconsidered as the habitual mistakes of English learners and needs corrected. In the early1980s, some of the learners began to realize China English is far from the explanationof habitual mistakes, and then point out the inevitability of China English in the processof translation from Chinese into English. In the 1990s, more and more scholarsrecognized that China English is a part of the world English system that can not beignored; more and more people devoted themselves into the exploration and the studyof the problem; a large number of research reports on China English began to bepublished; all kinds of new technologies and new views were applied to the research ofthis field; a lot of branches of this field were formed, which has had a profound impacton the research of other subjects such as linguistics, the second language acquisition,educational psychology, etc. If in the 1990s，China English still stayed within theframework of the academic research, then, in the 21^^ century, it already goes beyond theborders of the school gate, evolves into a social issue which attracts world attention.GLM, the global language monitor mechanism, whose headquarter locates in the USA,named “Chinglish” one of top 10 most popular words in the world in the year 2005 and2006. According to Guangzhou Daily, A web site called “Chinglish.com” has officiallystarted operation by a Dutch Chinglish BV company on October 3V\ 2006. The founderand chief executive of the company said: "Chinese and English are two languagesimportant to the future of humanity, the mission of “Chinglish.com” is to build anonline community in which Chinese and English can coexist, so as to promote China and western language and cultural exchange." The statistics show that, there are morethan 1000 English words that are derived from Chinese in the Oxford EnglishDictionary, involving categories including food，biology, religion, philosophy，politics,etc. Some words and phrases derived from Chinese, such as “long time no see",“guanxi，’，“kongfu”，"taikongren", etc. have been widely recognized by westerncountries.
