Chapter 1 Introduction
In this chapter, an overview of the thesis will be presented at first, and then itssignificance in theory and pedagogy will be shown, at last its organization will bebriefly introduced.
1.1 Overview
The thesis aims to prove that the use of formulaic sequences is helpful inenhancing speaking proficiency of L2 learners. After spoken data from SWECCL areanalysed, it describes overall features, frequency and distribution of formulaicsequences across higher rated group and lower rated group, and the relationshipbetween the use of formulaic sequences and L2 speaking proficiency will also bestudied.Four research questions are expected to be answered in the thesis:(1) What are the general characteristics of formulaic sequences across two groups?(2) Is there any difference in frequency of formulaic sequences across two groups?(3) Is there any difference in distribution of four types' formulaic sequences acrosstwo groups?(4) What is the relationship between the use of formulaic sequences and L2speaking proficiency? The first three questions will be solved with quantitative analysis, while the lastone with qualitative analysis. Two hypotheses are then put forward:(1) Higher achievers employ more and wider formulaic sequences than lowerachievers.(2) The more and wider use of formulaic sequences is helpflil in enhancing L2speaking proficiency.
1.2 Significance of the thesis
The thesis provides both theoretical and pedagogical significance. For one thing, it is of great importance in theory to offer some insights in this field. Linguistic theory has been dominated by the perception of rule-governed andsystematic behaviour for many years; however, formulaic sequences that once remainedin a marginal status in linguistics have attracted much attention. In recent years, anincreasing number of researches on formulaic sequences have been done at home andabroad, suggesting that formulaic sequences play a vital role in both first languageacquisition (FLA) and second language acquisition (SLA). Among these studies, earlyresearches focus mainly on the linguistic analysis of native speakers (Peters 1977;Nattinger & DeCarrico 2000) and then attention has been gradually paid to SLA wherereading and writing always occupy primary positions. Nevertheless, a very limited bodyof researches examine the link between the use of formulaic sequences in speech andspeaking proficiency of L2 learners. The thesis intends to explore the relationship between the use of formulaicsequences in speech and speaking proficiency of Chinese English Learners (CEL). Itaims to prove that the use of formulaic sequences is helpftil in enhancing L2 learners'speaking proficiency. Speaking data for research are selected from Spoken and WrittenEnglish Corpus of Chinese Learners (SWECCL) that provides reliable and persuasivespeech data of Chinese English majors. Therefore, the thesis can add more informationto researches on the use of formulaic sequences in speech and L2 speaking proficienc
