better term."(Jones,1917) However, the expression had actually been used muchearlier by Alexander Ellis in 1869 and Peter Du Ponceau in 1818 (the term used by Henry C.K. Wyld in 1927 was "received standard"). According to Fowler's Modern English Usage(1965), the correct term is "the Received Pronunciation". The word received conveys itsoriginal meaning of accepted or approved – as in "received wisdom"(British Library website,"Sounds Familiar?" section). The reference to this pronunciation as Oxford English isbecause it was traditionally the common speech of Oxford University; the production ofdictionaries gave Oxford University prestige in matters of language. The extended versions ofthe Oxford English Dictionary give Received Pronunciation guidelines for each word.

Conclusion

As we analyzed above, because of the great influence of the tremendous languagevitality of American English, nowadays in China more and more college English majors laytheir phonetic preference in GA, and their attitude and self-identify to American accent aresuperior to that of British. Most of them choose GA as the ideal accent to imitate and practise. But in the practical application of oral English, most of the English majors reveal manyproblems and mistakes in speaking English with American accent. The English accents ofmost English majors in China are still British-oriented, although they prefer GA and try tospeak American accent of English. Many of the college English majors in China cannot make clear the differences betweenAmerican accent and British accent. It is a big problem for the learners who want to acquire astandard American sound. The difference between GA and RP lies in many aspects:
(1) They use different phonetic transcriptions. RP adopts DJ phonetic chart while GAuses KK symbols. Both of the two transcriptions originated from the IPA, the InternationalPhonetic Alphabet, which is adopted in most of the English text books for Chinese learners.
(2) There are quite a few vowels that are distinctively different in pronunciation betweenGA and RP,
.(3) The consonantal differences are quite subtle, but also important to distinguish thetwo accents, such as the TAP or FLAP sounds in GA and the dark   which appear with theletter ‘r’ after a vowel sound
(4) British intonation is rhythmical and up-and-down while American intonation issmooth and steady.
