摘要:Students majoring in arts are a special group. There do exist many problems in theirEnglish study. While students' affective variables play an essential role, English classroomlearning anxiety, a complex and multidimensional phenomenon,is generally harmful to artstudents' English learning.

y andambiguity tolerance of reading are negatively related,the lower the tolerance, the higherthe degree of anxiety; similarly,if the anxiety declines and the ambiguity tolerance willrise, one can cause the other. It also points out that three anxiety sources of English readingare: the undetermined factor on the surface of words and phrases, dislike or unfamiliarsubject, and cultural differences.
In recent decades, there have been plentiful studies at home concerning affectivefactors learning EFL teaching in Chinese context. Li Jiongying (2004) presented ananalysis of the psychological causes of language anxiety from the theoretical perspectivesof psychoanalysis, behaviorism and humanism and neurobiology. Huang Qiang (2003)investigated the relationship between language anxiety and the results of NMET (NationalMatriculation English Test) among middle school students and found that the FLCASscores of students with great test anxiety have a marked negative correlation with theirlanguage performance (the grades of NMET). Wang Yinquan and Wang Yushu(2001) madea brief review on Language anxiety study abroad, which gave a detailed introduction ofFLCAS and the studies upon language anxiety. Wen WeiPing and Zhu Yuming(1998)conducted a research on language anxiety in FL in several universities and colleges inHunan province and the results reported that more than 45% of the college students haveexperienced anxious feelings in their language learning process. Students who have higheranxiety level often fail the exams and have negative attitudes towards English class, whilestudents with lower anxiety levels are usually more successful in FL class.


Chapter Two Theoretical Framework


This chapter includes the theoretical framework. The author systematically describesthe theory of Foreign Language Learning Anxiety. And on the basis of the theory theauthor wants to find some strategies to solve the problem of the art students in EnglishLearning.


2.1 Anxiety
Anxiety is a high frequency word used in the field of Psychology. There are manyresearchers who pay more attentions to this aspect in English learning. In this part theauthor introduces the definition of anxiety and hopes to find some useful methods for thestudies.


2.1.1 Definitions about Anxiety
Anxiety is the word in psychology field with a high frequency. Anxiety is a vagueunpleasant emotional state with qualities of apprehension, dread, distress, and uneasiness(Chen Yao and Li Changjiang, 2007). “An unpleasant emotional state or situation which ischaracterized by subjective feelings of apprehension, tension and worry, and by activationor arousal of the automatic nervous system” (Spielberger: 1970). According to Scovel(1978: 129-142), anxiety is a state of uneasiness and apprehension or fear caused by theanticipation of something threatening. Spielberger (1966: 3-20) describes anxiety assubjective, consciously perceived feelings of apprehension and tension, accompanied by orassociated with activation or arousal of the autonomic nervous system. Anxiety is differentfrom fear, because anxiety always has no objects,but fear has a specific dreadful object,such as a person or things. In the study of theory, this term is used to indicate a kind ofSubprime motivation (or in conditional situation); it propels people to make avoidingreaction.
