Chapter Five Analysis and Correction of ChinglishErrors—Redundancy


Unnecessary words or phrases are always found producing Chinglish. Most of them comefrom Chinese’ language use habit, thus are not easily realized by Chinese English-learners.Sentence structure difference between Chinese and English also embodies the structuring oftheir respective conceptual systems. It has to be explained before unfolding the analysis thatexamples in this chapter are organized differently compared with Chapter Four. In thischapter, conceptual metaphor underlying is not on the level of meaning, but is ongrammatical structures.In Chinese, people conceptualize grammatical structures differently from English nativespeakers, and this difference prevents Chinese English-learners' from being concise in theirEnglish expressions. Generally, two conceptual metaphors are representative and frequentlyoccurred in Chinese people's conceptualization about grammatical structures. They are entitymetaphor and journey metaphor. According to the author's analysis and generalization, theyare controlling Chinese way of organizing a sentence, and they have given rise to a greatnumber of redundant English expressions as exemplified in the following parts.

Conclusion


Generally speaking, the present study has accomplished work in the following fiveaspects:
1 Pointing out tiie essence of Chinglishexpressing Chinese conceptual system in thevehicle of English language form.
2. With a comprehensible review of previous studies on conceptual metaphor'sapplication to SLA, this study presents a demonstration concerning the origin of Chinglish,and arrives at the conclusion that conceptual system difference between Chinese and Englishis the origin of Chinglish errors. At the same time,the capability of conceptual metaphor incorrecting Chinglish errors is confirmed~systematicity and economy are the advantages ofconceptual metaphor in correcting Chinglish errors.
3. With Deignan's cross-linguistic comparison of metaphor being the operationaldefinition, a procedure of analyzing Chinglish errors through conceptual metaphor isdeveloped, namely, comparison between conceptual metaphors extracted from Chinglishexpressions and their English revisions. Therefore,a new method of analyzing andcorrecting Chinglish errors is proposed by the present study.
