摘要:Teachers’ beliefs have the close relationship with learners and teaching practices.Therefore, it is very urgent and essential to provide the specific definition English teacher’sbeliefs in teaching process.
CHAPTER 1INTRODUCTION
1.1Research background
In the past, researchers always paid close attention to the EFL teachers’ actions thatare teaching behaviors in classroom. The teachers’ beliefs were defined and discussed inmany fields in China in 1980s when Piaget (1985) presented his theory of constructivismwhich originated from human’s own organization. According to this theory, it isbelieved that knowledge and practice experience of objects were from continuousconstructions. Through these researches, English teachers’ actions and their teaching beliefshave the close relations. It means that teachers’ beliefs influence their teaching behaviorsand their studies. Calder had identified teachers’ perceptions, that is, their beliefs or visionsthrough his researches. The author discussed the development of the theory onconstructivism and constructive teaching and learning in Chapter 2.Allen (2002) pointed out that EFL teacher’s beliefs can direct their teaching behaviors,teaching methods and their teaching reorganizations. This signal about English teacher’sviews is significant for us to understand the present situation of the English education incolleges and academies. These signs indicate that the study of teachers’ beliefs and theexisting influential factors take a big part in English educational reform in universities.After studying the successful educational reforms in universities, it is found that therelationship between any educational reform and teachers’ thoughts about the reform isvery close and important. At the same time, their thoughts about the reform are affected bytheir teaching beliefs in working. The successful English educational reforms lean greatlyon EFL teachers and the beliefs of teachers and learners. Along with the rapiddevelopment of economy in western countries especially English-speaking countries,English has become a global language now and increasingly become the importantlanguage. Held and McGrew pointed out that English is regarded as the lingua franca inmany fields including business, media, Science, and tourism etc.

1.2 Research objective and the significance
K. Johnson (1994) proposed three basic assumptions by researching on teachers’beliefs. Firstly, teachers’ beliefs can effect perception and judgment such as what teacherssay and do in the classroom. Secondly, it is critical for teachers’ beliefs in teaching process.Thirdly, it is necessary to understand teacher’s belief since it plays the important role inthe teaching education. And teacher’s beliefs are significant perceptions in recognizingteachers’ teaching processes, classroom instructions and specific teaching practices. In1970s, the study on teaching began to pay close attention to the importance of teachers’beliefs. It was a quite significant finding. Therefore, teachers’ beliefs are importantthoughts on directing EFL teaching education and practices to help current workingteachers develop their thinking and practices. The research increasingly in this field hasachieved new ways of perceptions about teaching and professional and educationaldevelopment. At the same time, many implications can be concluded.
