Conclusion

The 66 argumentative writings on the same topic written by English majors andBritish university students were selected as samples to analyze appraisalcharacteristics. Through contrastive interlanguage analysis of discourse appraisal intheir writing, the main findings are presented as follows:The results are shown in the following: in terms of appraisal resources, thesignificant differences from British university students are mainly manifested in affect,disclaim and entertain resources; In addition, English majors overuse affect resourcesbut underuse the other eight resources. In terms of language features, the resultshowed like this: 1. In terms of attitude system, English majors usually realize it byuse of adjectives and verbs; In addition to adjectives and verbs, British universitystudents also choose nominalization to express attitude. Excessive use of explicitexpression such as ‘ I want/like/hope ’ or such sentence structure like ‘ I/We + be +adj ’ often appear in English majors’ argumentative writings which shows clearspoken feature. In addition, obviously, English majors rarely used inexplicit means ofexpression. In the appreciation, ‘ important ’ is mostly used by English majors andusually appeared as adjective such as ‘ it is important’
