4 Results and Analysis

4.1 The General Situation about the Web-based Autonomous Learning
The first section of the questionnaire includes eight items concerning the subjects’network environment, their motivation of English learning, their general attitude toEnglish learning under the network environment and their purpose of searching on theInternet. According to Table 4-1, 59.3% of undergraduates have their own computers and40.7% don’t have. However, from Table 4-2, we can find that 97.3% of students’ mobilephones can connect to the Internet. And then, according to the analysis of item 3, 92.9% ofstudents live and study in areas which are covered by the wireless network. That is to say,nearly 60% of undergraduates can use their computers at any time through connecting thewireless network, and almost all the students can connect their mobile phones to theWireless Fidelity to search on the Internet. In Shanxi Normal University, comprehensivecoverage rate of wireless signal makes it convenient for students to search on the Internet.Under such an environment, time students spent on the Internet everyday was analyzed.27.4% of students spend 1-2 hours every day, 30.8% spend 3-5 hours and 41.8% spendmore than 5 hours on the Internet. However, according to Table 4-5, 30.8% of students usethe Internet for obtaining information, 50.3% for entertainment and only 18.9% forEnglish learning. Therefore, although undergraduates can search on the Internetconveniently, they seldom use the Internet for English learning. All in all, it is importantto encourage undergraduates to make full use of the Internet to learn English.

Conclusion

The main purpose of this thesis is to know the current situation of non-Englishmajors of using network for English autonomous learning in Shanxi Normal University.The research includes the qualitative and the quantitative study. First, the questionnaireswere designed to investigate non-English majors’ English autonomous learning abilityunder the network environment in Shanxi normal University and then interviews werearranged among 20 subjects. Through the investigation and analysis of quantitative andqualitative data, the results indicate that the wireless network of the university isextremely strong, and almost all the students can easily connect their mobile phones andcomputers to wireless signals to search on the Internet, but the results of the survey alsoshow that very few students use the Internet to learn English, too many students are usingthe Internet for entertainment, and they mostly lack of consciousness of Englishautonomous learning under the network environment. And most of the college studentsdefine passing English level tests such as CET4 and CET6 as their English learninggoals and devote themselves into these tests. Many learners can’t make study plans whichis suit for their current learning level on the basis of learning degree truly and objectively,wasting a lot of time but obtaining little effect. And second, students’ ability of using theInternet for English autonomous learning ability is also very low, especially in the aspectof using learning strategies.
