Chapter Two Literature Review 

hree  sections  consist  this  chapter.  First,  in  Section  2.1,  some  major  relevant studies  of  thematic  progression  patterns  abroad  are  introduced.  Then  Section  2.2 focuses  on  the  relevant  studies  of  thematic  progression  patterns  at  home.  Finally, Section  2.3  makes  a  brief  summary  of  thematic  progression  patterns  abroad  and  at home and offers the main research questions of this study. In  the  past  years,  a  lot  of  scholars  abroad  and  at  home  have  studied  on  the research  of  thematic  progression  from  different  aspects  on  the  basis  of  the  previous studies. They have contributed to study of the thematic progression and applied their research in the field of discourse analysis. 

2.1 Related Study of Thematic Progression Abroad 
First,  relevant  study  on  text  books.  In  1978,  Newssham  studied  the  different majors’ textbooks of colleges contrastively in England and France. He found that the way  of  choosing  thematic  progression  patterns  between  English  and  French  were different. In his study, it is found that the linear progression pattern is prefered by the English  native  speakers  while  the  constant  topic  progression  pattern  as  well  as  the theme-rheme pattern are chosen frequently by the French native speakers.  Second,  relevant  study  on  scientific  texts.  In  1987,  Dubois  applied  thematic progression patterns to scientific texts.
