Chapter Four Research Methodology 

In  this  chapter,  the  three  research  questions  will  put  forward  in  Section  4.1. Section 4.2 will discuss the research method. The data collection part will be talked about in Section 4.3. And the analysis of data is in Section 4.4. Finally, Section 4.5 is the results and discussion. 

4.1 Research Questions 

This study mainly studies on the thematic progression patterns of the English abstracts of academic papers and aims to solve the following three questions: (1)  What  are  the  thematic  progression  patterns  in  the  abstracts  of  English academic papers? (2) Which kind of thematic progression patterns is preferred in the abstracts of English academic papers? (3) What are the implications of the research for the English abstract writing of Chinese academic papers?

Conclusion

This chapter is the part of conclusion. Firstly, in Section 5.1, it will provide the major findings of this study. Secondly, in Section 5.2 the implication of the study will be offered. Then the limitation of the study will be talked about in Section 5.3. At last the recommendation for the future study will be shown in Section 5.4 finally. According  to  the  preceeding  relevant  studies  from  the  aspect  of  thematic progression  patterns  and  based  on  the  theoretical  framework  of  Halliday’s Systemic-Functional Grammar, Xu Shenghuan’s seven logical semantic relationships and Huang Guowen’s six thematic progression patterns, the present research makes an analysis  of  thirty  sample  English  abstracts  of  academic  papers  written  by  native English speakers selected from Science and Nature. The aim of the present research is to  study  the  preference  of  choosing  different  kinds  of  thematic  progression  patterns applied in English abstracts of academic papers.  Shown  in  the  preceding  parts,  this  thesis  makes  a  quantitative  and  qualitative analysis of the English abstracts of academic paper that are written by English native speakers,  and  explore  the  thematic  progression  patterns  and  cohesive  devices  of  the abstracts. Based on the data analysis in previous chapter, the study’s major findings are as follows: The most preferred thematic progression pattern employed in the abstracts written by  English  native  speakers  is  the  Continuous  progression,  which  has  the  average occurring frequency of 26.9% .
