Chapter 2 Literature Review
2.1 Studies of Validity Theory and Validation Framework
The present inquiries into the theory of validity and validation framework in China mainly concentrated on reviewing and predicting their development in the past and future, such as Gu Xiangdong & Peng Kangzhou (2008), Han Baocheng & Luo Kaizhou (2013), Li Qinghua (2006), Xu Qilong (2012), Xu Yun (2011), Xue Rong (2008) and so on. At the same time, the validation framework has been widely applied to the validity studies of TEM 4 or TEM 8 (Wang Shunyu & Liu Shiying, 2007), CET 4 or CET 6 (Xue Mei et al., 2006), College Entrance English Examination (Li Zhi & Xiao Yunnan, 2013), university-based English exam (Chen Min & Liu Qin, 2014) or objective tests (Chen Xiaokou, 2010) on the basis of Messick’s “unitary concept of validity” or the argument-based approach by Bachman and Palmer. Yet, Liu Qin & Ouyang Rongqing (2013) conducted a tentative research on the validity of the listening section of Practical English Test for Colleges——Level A (PRETCO-A) according to Weir’s evidenced-based approach to validation. They collected the validation evidence from the following five aspects. Context validity was examined from text length and speech rate, topics and authenticity as well as task type. Theory-based validity was mainly analyzed through language knowledge. For scoring validity, item analysis and internal consistency were explored. In terms of criterion-related validity, correlation with different versions of PRETCO-A and the scores of CET4-listening was calculated and analyzed. Consequential validity about the backwash effect on classroom teaching and learning was verified by employing questionnaire survey. In this research, not only the quality of the sample test was proved in the five aspects, but also a good insight into the practicality of Weir’s validation framework was achieved.
