d English writers.  This  thesis  is  perceived  to  be  of  great  significance  and  have  some  implications for  both  students  and  teachers  on  writing  and  teaching.  Nowadays,  international leading  English  journals  provide  a  good  platform  to  scientific  workers  for  academic communication.  Therefore,  the  speed  of  international  publication  is  increasing. Chinese  students  still  have  difficulties  in  academic  writing  so  that  it  is  necessary  for them  to  improve  the  ability  in  research  article  writing.  To  improve  their  abilities, grasping  the  knowledge  on  genre  of  research  articles  is  critical  when  the  L2  writers are  writing  English  research  articles.  Besides,  it  is  hoped  that  the  Chinese  writers could be aware of the weakness in generic structure of English research articles. Thus, much  attention  could  be  focused  on  choosing  the  appropriate  generic  structure  of  a research article in the process of writing.

Chapter Two LITERATURE REVIEW AND TEORETICAL FRAMEWORK 

2.1 Previous Studies on Research Article 
This part describes research article from three aspects which are the definition of research  article,  prominent  features  of  research  article  and  some  related  studies  on research article.  In  practice,  research article can  be  named as research  paper.  Many authors have tried to clarify the definition of research article. For instance, Berge & Saffioti (1987, p.  9)  treat  a  research  paper  as  a  written  passage,  the  purpose  of  which  is  to  present information to support your point of a particular topic. Although no general agreement on  the  concept  of  research  article,  there  are  some  points  commonly  accepted.  A research article should be formal and it aims to present conclusion based on your own ideas  and  research  findings.  In  modern  society,  research  article  belongs  to  a  type  of genre  accounting  for  documents  in  technology,  engineering,  science,  the  health professions,  and  other  specialized  fields  (Pfeiffer  &  Adkins,  2006,  p.  129).  Thus, research  articles  are  identified  as  the  written  passage  to  present  your  exploration, discussion or analysis of a factual issue.
