Chapter I Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Mastering a foreign languagecan broaden one’s horizon, establish a communication platform and build a bridge to anew field. Therefore, more learners choose to learn a new language, especiallyEnglish. However, language learning is in need of time and effort. For almost allEnglish learners in China, they have little chance to communicate with native Englishspeakers and they can hardly immerse themselves in target language environment. Asa result, classroom is the main place and major chance for them to learn. The progressof foreign language learners is largely dependent on the level of teachers’ classroomteaching. To a great extent, this is also true for full-time English majors.Teacher talk makes a great contribution to language input in learning a foreignlanguage. It benefits classroom interaction and communication. Teacher talk is animportant research subject in foreign language teaching. Nunan (1991) thinks thatteacher talk is of great significance, both for organizing a whole class and for theprocess of acquiring a language. Teacher talk may be the main way of target languageacquisition students probably receive. Hakansson (1986) notices that the quality andquantity of teacher talk in classroom may even determine whether a specific class cansucceed or not.

1.2 Research Purpose and Significance
Language is not only a tool of communication, but also a part of social life,playing an incomparable role in social activities. The purpose of learning a languageis to acquire the ability to use it for communication. But how to acquire a foreignlanguage? One possible and efficient way is to expose learners to native languageenvironment and make learners communicate with others using the target language.However, for most Chinese students who major in English, just very few of them havethe chance to go aboard and experience English. Therefore, for majority of thestudents, classroom is an indispensable place to learn English. In the limited classtime, teacher questioning and student answering is the vital way for interactionbetween teacher and students, and teacher questioning also encourages learners toopen their mouths, practice English and express themselves.Currently, for the purpose of making contributions to students’ second languageacquisition, an increasing number of universities hire native English-speakingteachers to teach English and inject new vitality to foreign language teaching.Meanwhile, many Chinese teachers are endeavoring to improve their teachingabilities. With the joint efforts of both sides, foreign language teaching has beengreatly improved. There obviously exist differences in the educational background,cultural habit, teaching method between the native English-speaking teachers and thenon-native English-speaking teachers. It leads to differences lie in the aspects ofteaching atmosphere, teaching effects, students’ participation, students’ reactions andclassroom interaction. Obviously, native English-speaking teachers have their uniquesuperiority.
