section  begins  with  the definitions  of  genre  from  different  schools.  Subsequently,  the  development  of  genre analysis is showed.Genre is defined as ―a particular type or style of literature, art, film or music that you  can  recognize  because  of  its  special  features‖  (Advanced  Learner’s English-Chinese  Dictionary,  2009,  p.  342). Initially,  the  concept  of ―genre‖  sprang from works in the field of literary. Since then; genre has been widely discussed in the domain  of literature.  According to Dubrow (1982, p. 2) in literary  field, genre can be regarded as the conventions of behavior which are utilized and understood among the discourse  community.  She  also  proposed  that  the  series  of  conventions  gradually evolved from those earlier forms (1982, p. 117). By the end of 19th century, this term was  first  introduced  into  the  field  of  linguistics  and  applied  linguistics  by ethnographers.  Accompanied  by  the  further  study  of  this  field,  genre  research  alters linguists‘ perspective, and then they extended their attention from sentence level to discourse  level,  and  researchers  began  to  focus  on  textual  structures  and  semantic functions.  Hyon  (1996)  summarizes  a  wide  variety  of  previous  academic  fruits  and comes up  with a  conclusion that there are three  main leading  branches in the  field  of genre  research:  the  New  Rhetoric  School,  the  Sydney  School,  and  the  ESP  School. Until  now,  genre  is  still  a  disputable  term  which  is  difficult  to  define.  There  are various  definitions  of  genre.  The  reason  may  be  that  the  scholars‘  attentions  from different  fields  are  laid  on  a  particular  concern.  In  order  to  illustrate  this  term comprehensively, the author tries to interpret it from different schools.
