Chapter 2 Literature Review

In this part, the thesis first introduces development status of interpreting researches, and then interpreting strategies will be disc ussed on the basis of re search theories at home and aboard. Besides, it m akes a brie f introduction of transl ation strategies of culture-loaded expressions and an overview of the cu lture-loaded expressions in the west and in China.

2.1 Studies on Interpreting at Home and Abroad
“The English word ‘interpreter ’ is a hi ghly appropriate sem antic foundation for ‘interpreter’ and ‘interpreting’ in our current understanding” (Franz P ?chhacker: 10). Although there is som e fascinating evidence of the role and status of interpreters in history, it appears that interpreting doesn’t receive enough attention and the studies on it is far more behind compared with the researches on the translation. Interpreting has long been taken part in dif ferent regions and peri ods of time in history, however, it has not been connected with a fixed status as a pr ofession until early in the twentieth century. The excellent interpreting practice at the Paris Peace Conf erence in 1919 marks a vital turning point in the m odern history of in ternational interpreting. The recognition of interpreting as a profession and the developm ent of interpreting for various purposes calls for more researches on the specialized knowledge and skills which is shared by its practitioners.

2.2 Studies on Translating of Culture-loaded Expressions at Home and Abroad
Translation, a communicative activity between languages, is not only a linguistic transference, but also a cultu ral transplantation. Many famous scholars aboard, such as Nida, Newmark, Venuti, Lefevere, and Susan Bassnett have made prominent researches on the cultural translation. Peter Newmark put forward semantic translation and communicative translation in Approaches to Translation, which stresses on the effects caused by communication and the content of the inform ation. Communicative translation pays attention to the equivalence of readers’ reaction whereas se mantic translation aim s to reproduce the equivalent meaning and context as the original text in the context of the target language culture. Eugene A. Nida pointed out that “the relation between language and culture are primarily matters of how language is used and are not m atters of language structure” (Nida: 81).
