In the co-edited book Translation, History and Culture, Susan Bassnett and Andre Lefevere  mentioned th at  culture and trans lation  interacted with each  other and the process of translation was not only a linguistic one but also an extra-linguistic procedure; the basic unit of translation was “neither word nor sentence, nor te xt, but culture”, and the translation was intended to “provide the translated text with the same function in the target culture as that of the original text in the source culture” (Ling Ping, 2008:7).

Chapter 5   Interpreting Strategies of Culture-loaded Expressions in the Light of Interpretive Theory

In order to deal with the interpreting difficulties mentioned in previous chapter, the author conducts an analysis on the interpre ting of culture-loaded expressions from three stages of “comprehension”, “deverbalization” and “re-expression” with examples in the light of Interpretive Theory and tries to put forward several effective and feasible coping strategies for each phrase.

5.1 Coping Strategies in Comprehension

According  to the Interpretive Theory ,  the interpreter has to understand the communicative  sense,  the ideas, no t  the word s.  It m ay  well be pe rfectly  possible to understand  a speaker ’s  meaning  without actually underst and  every single word and expression  they use, and without having  to  reproduce all of those term s  in the interpretation. In order to be able to interpret a speaker’s ideas, an interpreter must know first of all what is im portant in their comments and what is secondary, what is essential and what accessory. In analyzing a speech, th e interpreter must therefore identify the main ideas. The m ain ideas imply a hierarchy of relative im portance of ideas.
