Scholars? attention to the genre of the research article abstract derives from the strong desire to understand the mechanisms underlying these multifunctional discourses. As suggested by Ventola (1994: 333), abstracts “have become a tool of mastering and managing the ever increasing information flow in the scientific community”. As stated above, abstract writing is regarded as an interaction between writers and readers, and therefore as a social practice. The interactional nature of abstract leads the investigation into the interactional features of abstract. While an investigation of language use is essential, the explanation for the specific use of language in this particular disciplinary culture is of more significance. In other words, it is worthwhile to find out reasons of language use in abstract for the purpose of realizing non-linguistic goals in a broad sense of socio-cultural contexts. With those concerns in mind, the present study is a contrastive study of interactions as promotion in South China University of Technology (SCUT) and California Institute of Technology (Caltech) doctoral dissertation abstracts. Cultural factors giving rise to the differences are also probed into. In specific, the study aims to answer the following research questions: 1) What is the overall distribution of interactional resources in SCUT and Caltech abstracts? 2) What are the similarities and differences between SCUT and Caltech abstracts in terms interactions as promotion? 3) What are the possible cultural factors attributing to the differences?
