4.1 The overall results   

From the perspective of White (2001), appraisal framework is a particular approach to explore,  describe  and  explain  the  way  language  is  used.  By  making  use  of  the language,  the  writer  or  speaker  can  evaluate  resources,  adopt  stances,  and  manage interpersonal  positioning  and  relationships.  It  is  composed  of  three  sub-systems: attitude (the expression of values), engagement (the introduction and management of voices to whom values are attributed) and graduation (the manipulation of the degrees of values). The  present  paper  intends  to  examine  the  evaluative  resources  shown  in  the narrative and how the informant manipulates these resources to reach solidarity with the listener.  As has been pointed out, the present paper aims to address the following research questions.  i) What is the general distribution of evaluative resource in terms of triad subsystems in the female scholar’s narrative under the framework of appraisal theory?  ii)  How  does  this  evaluation  exert  a  galvanizing  impact  upon  the  realization  of  the interpersonal meaning?In order to answer the first question, the overview of the distribution and patterns of  three  subsystems  of  the  appraisal  theory  will  be  presented  and  explicated  in  the meantime.  Then  it  presents  the  detailed  analysis  of  each  system  of  appraisal  with instances  from  the  narrative,  to  explore  how  the  informant  employs  the  evaluative resources to achieve interpersonal meaning with the listener.

Since  the  policy  of  expansion  of  university  enrollment  has  taken  effect  in  1999  and the  advent  of  massive  overseas  self-funded  students,  more  and  more  Chinese youngsters  have  the  access  to  the  higher  education.  In  the  traditional  majors  and professions such as liberal art and teachers, women seem to play an indispensable role in these areas nowadays.
