in  argumentative  essays  written  in  CET-6  and  CET-4.  Quite  few scholars  have  studied  the  use  of  CDMs  by  Chinese  English  majors,  especially  those employed  in  their  master  theses  which  involves  complex  logical  relations.  Thus,  this research  will  focus  on  the  use  of  CDMs  by  Chinese  English  majors  in  their  master degree  theses.  Previous  studies  have  shown  some  problems  in  using  CDMs  by Chinese  non-English  majors,  such  as  using  fewer  types  of  CDMs  and  avoiding unfamiliar  CDMs,  etc.  While  compared  with  non-English  majors,  English  majors have a better command of English, this research therefore attempts to explore whether English  majors  have  the  similar  problems  as  non-English  majors  do.  In  order  to achieve  this  goal,  the  present  study  will  make  a  comparative  study  on  the  use  of CDMs by native speakers and Chinese English majors.

1.2   Significance of the Present Study 
A  correct  understanding  and  appropriate  use  of  CDMs  constitutes  a  significant aspect of one’s pragmatic ability. However, instead of discourse competence training, the  traditional  teaching  only  focuses  on  grammar-target  sentence  training  which  will break the coherence of the discourse. Therefore, it is necessary for the present study to explore the actual use of CDMs and encourage the students to make full use of CDMs to  achieve  the  coherence  of  the  discourse  and  grasp  the  skeleton  of  the  text  from  a new perspective.
