p;to explore the potential relation between the omission of verbal inflection and ILG impairment within the framework of MP, and to further discuss the possible causes concerning why some L2ers usually omit and incorrectly use verbal inflection in their ILGs. The research results, of course, will bring some positive suggestions for English teaching and learning. The significance of the study is as follows. First and foremost, examining the verbal inflectional system and interlanguage syntactic system helps to discuss the relation between L2 morphology and syntax as to whether they are independent of or directly related with one another. Furthermore, the discrepancies between the opinions of “impaired ILG” and “unimpaired ILG” also lie in their relationship. Secondly, the research findings we obtain in this study will not only help L2ers better acquire and use English inflectional morphology, but also bring some inspiration and practical suggestions to teachers in English teaching. Last but not least, previous studies in this respect, both at home and abroad, are mainly empirical ones, longitudinal or cross-sectional. Moreover, the subjects in foreign studies focus largely on children and adults, while those in domestic studies are mostly Chinese students from high schools and non-English majors from universities. Very few choose English majors as their subjects and collect data from certain corpus. Thus, the present study, with different subjects and
methodology, attempts to make a little contribution to studies in this field.

2.1 Universal Grammar and Its Development
UG Theory is proposed by Chomsky to address the problem of “the poverty of the stimulus” or “the logical problem of language acquisition” in child FLA. In Chomskyan sense, UG refers to the language faculty built into the human mind, seen as consisting of principles and parameters, that is, “the system of principles, conditions, and rules that are elements or properties of all human languages....the essence of human language” (Chomsky, 1975, p. 29). As the core of Chomsky’s linguistic theory, it has developed for over 50 years and gone through five phases, namely, Transformational Generative Grammar; Aspects, later Standard Theory; Extended Standard Theory; Government/Binding (GB) Theory; and MP.
