2.2 Previous Studies on Politeness and Impoliteness
The phenomena of politeness and impoliteness are cross-cultural and universalin people’s daily life. Studies on politeness and impoliteness from variousperspectives are popular both abroad and at home. In this part, the author willintroduce studies on politeness and then impoliteness abroad and in China.As one of the important issues in pragmatics, linguistic politeness has been paidmuch attention. Scholars have studied this area deeply from different perspectives and made great progress. Generally speaking, studies on politeness abroad can becategorized into five views: social norm view, politeness principle view, facemanagement view, conversational contract view, and rapport management view.Fraser (1990, p. 220) holds that the social norm view of politeness is a reflectionof the historical interpretation of politeness which is generally accepted by the publicwithin the English-speaking community. In brief, the view supposes that everysociety has a certain series of social norms which consist of more or less overt rulesthat regulate some certain behavior, a state of affairs, or a way of thinking in somecertain circumstance. Fraser (Ibid, p. 220) also points out that a positiveevaluation (politeness) emerges when a behavior conforms to the norm, and anegative evaluation (impoliteness) emerges when a behavior violates the norm.

4.1 Introduction

In this part, the author tries to explore the construal mechanism of mockpoliteness with the analytic tool: event cognition theory. The data of this thesis iscollected from the famous TV series Empresses in the Palace which is also renownedfor its charm of language. According to Li Chengtuan and Ran Yongping (2014),mock politeness is roughly classified into three types in this thesis. Then the authormakes an analysis of the mechanism of mock politeness under the theory of eventcognition.The author chooses the famous TV series Empresses in the Palace as arepresentative corpus. This TV series is highlighted not only by its plot, but also byits charm of conversation between characters, which attracts so many scholars.
